An emotional scene unfolded at King’ong’o Prison in Nyeri when a grandmother reunited with her 19-year-old grandson, Edwin Gathigi, who is serving a life sentence in a case that has left many questioning how family conflict can destroy a young life.

Edwin, a former Form Four student, was convicted of defilement after a court case where his grandmother stood as one of the key witnesses against him. 

The allegations centered on claims that he had abused his cousin, a case that led to his conviction and life imprisonment.

However, years later, the truth began to shift in a shocking turn of events. During a prison visit, the elderly grandmother broke down in tears and admitted that her testimony in court was not truthful.

She confessed that she had been influenced by her daughter, who is also the mother of the alleged victim, to give false evidence against Edwin.

“I raised you and never stopped loving you. I regret what I said in court. Please forgive me, Edwin,” she said tearfully during the reunion.

Her confession reopened deep questions about whether Edwin’s conviction was influenced more by a bitter family feud than by facts.
