Fresh Cracks Loom in Opposition as DCP MP Confronts Matiang’i, Jubilee

Embakasi North MP and Nairobi governor aspirant James Gakuya has warned former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and the Jubilee Party against pursuing an isolated political path, saying such a move could weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Gakuya spoke on Sunday during a political rally held in Mwiki, Nairobi County, which brought together key opposition figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

He said opposition unity remains fragile and could easily collapse if major players choose to act independently.

Addressing Jubilee leaders directly, Gakuya urged them to work closely with other opposition parties instead of charting their own course.

“When you walk alone in politics, you risk getting lost,” Gakuya told the crowd, adding that teamwork was the only way the opposition could present a serious challenge in 2027.

His remarks come amid growing tension within the United Opposition alliance, where disagreements over leadership, strategy, and trust have become increasingly visible.

In recent days, Jubilee and the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) have accused each other of secretly cooperating with the government, claims that have deepened suspicion within the coalition.

The division follows statements made earlier by Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, who alleged that Gachagua had held private discussions with President William Ruto ahead of the November 27 by-elections.

According to Kioni, these alleged talks raised questions about Gachagua’s loyalty to the opposition cause.

Gachagua strongly denied the accusations, insisting that he had no interest in negotiating or working with President Ruto.

He said his political direction had been shaped by voters from the Mount Kenya region, who, according to him, had rejected any engagement with the current administration.

The former deputy president later escalated the feud by launching fresh criticism against Jubilee, questioning the party’s role within the opposition and accusing it of playing double politics.

Meanwhile, Matiang’i, who is Jubilee’s preferred presidential candidate, has largely stayed away from joint opposition rallies led by Gachagua and Kalonzo.

His absence has fueled speculation that he may be building a separate political base as the 2027 race slowly takes shape.

Despite the public disagreements, opposition leaders continue to assure supporters that unity remains their ultimate goal.

They have repeatedly stated that the coalition plans to field a single presidential candidate to face President Ruto.
