Kalonzo Says He Shares in Kibaki’s Legacy as Political Temperatures Rise

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has said he deserves recognition for the achievements of Kenya’s third President, the late Mwai Kibaki, insisting that he played a key role in the successes of the Kibaki administration during his time as Vice President.

Speaking in a televised interview, Kalonzo defended his record in government and argued that the legacy often attributed solely to President Kibaki should also include those who served alongside him.

Kalonzo was Vice President between 2008 and 2013, a period many Kenyans associate with major infrastructure and economic growth.

According to Kalonzo, the achievements of that era were a collective effort. He repeatedly used the word “we” while referring to major national projects carried out under President Kibaki’s leadership.

“Kenyans remember that I was Vice President during the Kibaki years. That is when we built projects like the Thika Superhighway,” Kalonzo said.

The former Vice President also highlighted Kenya’s role in the peace process that led to the independence of South Sudan.

He noted that negotiations under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement were supported by the Kibaki administration and helped give birth to Africa’s newest nation.

“That process happened under President Kibaki, and I was part of that team,” he said, insisting that his diplomatic contribution should not be ignored.

Kalonzo went on to defend his long political career, particularly his time as the Member of Parliament for Kitui North, a seat he held for nearly three decades.

He argued that voters would not have continued electing him if he had failed to deliver development.

“People should ask themselves why the same man was elected again and again from 1985,” Kalonzo said, describing his record as one built on trust and service.

During the interview, Kalonzo also responded to criticism from President William Ruto, who has previously questioned why the former Vice President did not prioritize building a road to his home area earlier in his career.

Kalonzo explained that leaders should serve the public first before attending to personal interests. He said that projects closer to home were initiated toward the end of his tenure, when he felt national priorities had already been addressed.

At the same time, Kalonzo accused President Ruto of concentrating development projects around his own home region, claiming this created imbalance and unfair distribution of resources.

The Wiper leader also portrayed himself as a clean politician, saying he has never been linked to corruption scandals throughout his long career in public service.

He contrasted his record with that of some of his political rivals, whom he accused of facing serious integrity questions.

On the country’s economic direction, Kalonzo questioned President Ruto’s ambition to turn Kenya into a first-world economy similar to Singapore.

He argued that such comparisons ignore the realities facing ordinary Kenyans, especially high unemployment and rising living costs.

According to Kalonzo, bold promises mean little if millions of young people remain jobless and struggling to survive.
