The visit took place on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at the late Jirongo’s home in Lumakanda, following a tragic road accident along the Nakuru–Naivasha highway.
The accident, which occurred near Naivasha at around 3:00 a.m., involved a head-on collision with a Climax Coach bus traveling to Busia. Jirongo, a former leader of the youth group YK’92, lost his life in the crash.
Known for his political activism and involvement in Kenyan politics since the 1990s, Jirongo played a notable role in national events, including the Handshake government, which united former President Uhuru Kenyatta and the late Raila Odinga after the tense 2017 General Election.
Oburu Odinga, dressed in traditional attire and carrying a whisk—a tribute to his late brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga—personally handed over Kenyan shilling notes to the grieving family. The exact amount of Oburu’s donation was not disclosed.
He was accompanied by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, who contributed Ksh100,000, along with an additional sum reserved for youth members present at the home.
Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ also supported the effort with a Ksh100,000 donation, which was subdivided among the men and women in attendance.
The condolence visit came a day after Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga led another group of ODM leaders to support the family. Their efforts included donations and gifts such as bulls and fish to supplement funeral arrangements.
During the visit, Wanga humorously remarked, “Najua tumekuja na mboga, lakini lazima mboga ikulwe na ugali. Nataka kuwaambia hawa viongozi watoe ugali,” prompting leaders to contribute generously.
Among the donations recorded were Ksh100,000 from Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Ksh200,000 from Suna East MP Junet Mohammed, Ksh50,000 from Migori Woman Representative Rosa Buyu, and Ksh200,000 from Kakamega Woman Representative and gubernatorial aspirant Elsie Muhanda.
Nominated Senator Catherine Muma also contributed Ksh50,000, while Governor Wanga closed the fundraising session with Ksh300,000. The contributions were officially received by Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera.
Oburu Odinga emphasized that his visit was both a personal and political gesture. He described Jirongo as a long-time friend, tracing their connection back to 1992, when Jirongo led YK’92, a youth organization tasked with mobilizing support for the re-election of former President Daniel Moi.
Oburu also acknowledged Jirongo’s role as an ally to his late brother Raila Odinga, noting his contributions to key national initiatives and political reconciliations.
