Ida Betty Odinga widow of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has shared her lingering shock and questions surrounding her husband's sudden death and his unusual burial instructions in an emotional interview aired by TV47 on January 30, 2026.

Speaking publicly for the first time in recent months since Raila's passing on October 15, 2025, in an Indian hospital from cardiac arrest at age 80, Ida expressed disbelief at the timing. "We didn't expect Raila to die at this time; it came to us as a surprise," she said, her voice heavy with grief.

She described the double shock that followed upon learning of his pre-written will stipulating burial within 72 hours of death a directive the family honored, leading to his interment on October 19, 2025, next to his mother at Kang'o ka Jaramogi in Bondo.

Ida reflected on the brevity of the timeframe: "Another surprise that followed was that he had asked whether he could be buried within 72 hours.

I don't know when he wrote this will of his to be buried within 72 hours, whether he wrote it in Kenya or somewhere else, but 72 hours is such a short time."

Her words hint at subtle uncertainty, raising questions about the will's origins and circumstances without directly alleging foul play.

The statement has reignited quiet speculation among some supporters who have long questioned the rapid events following Raila's hospitalization abroad.

The veteran politician's death triggered nationwide mourning, a state funeral, and seven days of national tribute declared by President William Ruto, who praised Raila as a beacon of courage and father of our democracy.

Despite the swift burial aligning with his wishes defying some Luo cultural norms that traditionally allow longer mourning periods the family emphasized honoring his final instructions amid immense pressure to organize logistics quickly.

Ida's candid remarks, captured in a poignant close-up showing her distress, underscore the personal toll on the Odinga family more than three months later.

As she continues adjusting to life without her lifelong partner, her comments serve as a reminder of the profound loss felt across Kenya's political landscape and the enduring mysteries some associate with the circumstances of Raila's exit.
