Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu has addressed calls for him to leave the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party and join Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).

He confirmed on Monday, January 5, that he remains a UDA member and will only leave when he chooses to do so.

Nyutu emphasized that he is in no hurry to exit the ruling party despite his political ties to Gachagua.

“I am still a member of UDA and I shall remain there until I decide to leave. I will leave UDA when I want,” he stated firmly.

The senator, who has become a vocal critic of President William Ruto, argued that the head of state has no right to demand his resignation from UDA.

Nyutu compared the situation to Ruto’s own fallout with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, when Ruto remained in Jubilee despite calls to quit.

He insisted that Ruto lacks the moral authority to tell pro-Gachagua leaders in UDA to resign. Nyutu said the president’s past decisions allow him to make independent choices without external pressure.

Nyutu explained that his opposition to the Kenya Kwanza government stems from differences over policy priorities. He claimed that the government’s agenda no longer aligns with promises made during the campaign.

Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba also weighed in, criticizing some of Gachagua’s allies who remain in UDA.

She said they were attempting to pressure her to join DCP, but she affirmed she will stay in UDA until 2027.

Wamuchomba urged Gachagua’s supporters to resign if they cannot respect UDA’s rules. She highlighted that loyalty to the party structure should take precedence over personal political alliances.

Observers say the dispute underscores divisions within UDA as the 2027 elections approach.

Analysts note that internal party disagreements could influence candidate selections and overall cohesion.

Despite political pressure, Senator Nyutu remains resolute in maintaining his UDA membership.

His stance signals a determination to act independently while navigating the complex dynamics between UDA and DCP.

The ongoing tension between UDA loyalists and Gachagua allies is expected to remain a key talking point in Murang’a politics.

Residents and political watchers are closely following developments ahead of the next general elections.
