Senior Mt Kenya politician Jeremiah Kioni has revealed growing internal divisions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) over demands for a Deputy President position in the broad-based government arrangement.
Speaking on the matter, Kioni dismissed claims that ODM as a party is pushing for the powerful DP slot, insisting that the demand is coming from a specific faction within the party.
According to Kioni, the group pushing for the position is a wing of ODM led by Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, not the party’s official leadership or its broader membership.
“There is a section of ODM that looks very willing to be cannibalized,” Kioni said.
Kioni further stated that the faction’s push is unrealistic and unlikely to succeed, asserting that the Deputy President’s position is not up for grabs under the current political arrangement.
“They won’t get it,” he said, in a blunt assessment of the situation.
Kioni’s comments highlight simmering tensions within ODM as the party navigates its role in the new political order, balancing internal expectations with the realities of power-sharing at the national level.
