The parallel rallies held in Nyanza have brought the simmering internal divisions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) into full public view, marking a critical moment for the party’s future.

What had long remained internal disagreements has now evolved into an open contest over leadership, direction, and identity.

In Kisumu, ODM leader Dr. Oburu Oginga convened a rally aimed at affirming the party’s cooperation with President William Ruto’s administration.

He framed the engagement as a practical strategy to secure development opportunities for the region, arguing that political inclusion is necessary for economic progress.

However, the absence of several influential younger party figures highlighted the growing generational and ideological gaps within ODM.

At the same time, Winnie Odinga addressed supporters in Siaya, a symbolic stronghold of the Odinga family.

Her engagement focused on reconnecting the party with grassroots supporters, particularly young voters who feel disconnected from current leadership decisions.

She questioned the party’s alignment with the government and called for renewed internal democracy, positioning her message around accountability and reform.

Central to the standoff is the push for a National Delegates Convention, which reform-minded members see as essential to resolving leadership disputes and redefining ODM’s political path ahead of the 2027 elections. Control of party structures, nominations, and funding remains a key concern for both sides.

President Ruto’s recent nomination of Ida Odinga to a diplomatic role has further intensified debate within the party, with differing interpretations of its political implications.

As ODM navigates this crossroads, the outcome of these divisions will not only shape the party’s internal cohesion but also influence the broader opposition landscape in the coming election cycle.
