A chilling plot to murder a woman in Nairobi took an unexpected turn after the man hired to carry out the killing decided to spare her life and help her disappear, exposing the dark world of contract killings and the difficult moral choices faced by people trapped in poverty.

The man, identified as Peter, said the ordeal began when a wealthy and influential acquaintance approached him late one night in Uthiru with what he described as a “job opportunity.”

At first, Peter did not understand the nature of the task. When they met again the following day, the businessman revealed his intention: he wanted a woman eliminated because he believed she had influenced a legal case that was troubling his brother.

Shocked by the request, Peter said he felt torn between desperation and conscience. At the time, he was struggling with heavy debts and had no stable income.

Although disturbed by the plan, the promise of quick money tempted him to listen further. Over the following months, the businessman continued to pressure him, insisting that previous attempts by other hired individuals had failed.

In March 2024, Peter accepted an advance payment to plan the killing. He admitted that the money momentarily blinded him, but guilt and fear soon set in.

According to him, thoughts of his upbringing and faith weighed heavily on his mind as he imagined taking an innocent life.

Instead of carrying out the murder, Peter sought out the intended victim at her small business in Nairobi. When he revealed the plot to her, the woman was terrified.

She told him she was a young mother with a newborn child who depended on her. Moved by her situation, Peter decided he could not go through with the crime.

Together, they came up with a risky plan to deceive the man who had ordered the hit. They staged photos and short video clips to make it appear as though the woman had been abducted and killed.

Convinced that the job had been completed, the businessman reportedly sent the remaining payment.

Using part of the money, Peter helped the woman leave Nairobi temporarily to hide in a rural area. He also gave her financial support to help her start afresh and urged her never to return to places where she could be easily traced.

However, the lie did not hold for long. Peter later learned that the businessman had begun to suspect that the woman was still alive. Fearing for his own safety, he went into hiding, convinced that his life was now in danger.

The woman later confirmed that Peter’s actions saved her life, although the experience left her traumatised and financially ruined.

She said she eventually returned to Nairobi because she could not bear living in fear forever, despite ongoing concerns for her safety.

The shocking story highlights the hidden networks behind contract killings and the vulnerability of ordinary people who are drawn into criminal schemes by poverty.
