Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has travelled to Moscow for high-level talks with Russian government officials regarding Kenyans caught up in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War.

According to a statement released by his office on Sunday, March 15, Mudavadi’s visit aims to address concerns surrounding Kenyan citizens who were either voluntarily or fraudulently recruited into the Russian military and are now trapped in the conflict.

Contrary to earlier speculation, the Prime Cabinet Secretary is not scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin during the trip.

Instead, he will hold bilateral discussions with senior Russian ministers and officials to explore ways of resolving the situation affecting Kenyan nationals.

“Musalia Mudavadi, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, leaves for Moscow for bilateral meetings,” the statement from his office confirmed.

Reports indicate that the issue of Kenyans joining the Russian military has raised significant concern in Kenya after several deaths were reported.

According to available data, more than 18 Kenyans have reportedly died while fighting in the conflict, while over 30 others remain missing.

Authorities also believe that thousands of young Kenyans may have been recruited through misleading job offers, prompting the government to intensify diplomatic engagement with Russia to address the matter.

During the Moscow visit, Mudavadi is expected to push for measures that will allow affected Kenyans to safely return home.

“The talks will seek to address the situation surrounding Kenyans who may have been voluntarily or involuntarily drafted into the Russian military,” the statement added.

The Kenyan government is also seeking cooperation from Russian authorities to curb fraudulent recruitment schemes that lure young people with promises of employment abroad.

Apart from addressing the issue of stranded Kenyans, Mudavadi’s visit will also focus on strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Kenya and Russia.

Key areas of discussion include education partnerships, labour mobility, healthcare cooperation, infrastructure development, and energy collaboration.

Mudavadi also highlighted the potential for expanding trade relations between the two nations, noting that Kenya could increase exports of key agricultural products to the Russian market.

“There exists great potential for the export of Kenyan coffee, tea and floriculture products to the Russian market,” he noted.

As part of the visit, Mudavadi is also scheduled to meet Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as other senior officials responsible for education and labour matters.

Additionally, the Prime Cabinet Secretary is expected to deliver a public lecture at the prestigious Moscow State Institute of International Relations.

The trip is part of Kenya’s broader diplomatic efforts to safeguard the welfare of its citizens living, studying, or working abroad while also strengthening bilateral relations with global partners.
