Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika’s husband, Sam Mburu, of wielding undue influence over police operations in Nakuru County, allegedly using his business ties with President William Ruto to intimidate law enforcement officers.
Speaking during a press briefing in Karen, Gachagua claimed that police officers in Nakuru had confidentially informed him that Mburu issues direct commands to them, despite holding no official government position.
According to Gachagua, Mburu has allegedly positioned himself as the “President of Nakuru,” often bragging that while Kihika runs the county government, he is in charge of the national government’s functions in the region.
Gachagua went on to list a series of business dealings he alleges Sam Mburu is involved in alongside President Ruto. “Police officers told me that Mburu claims to be the President's business partner.
He has boasted about importing electricity meters for Kenya Power, supplying fertiliser, and bringing in duty-free rice and sugar.
These ventures, he allegedly says, are done in partnership with President Ruto, and that they share the profits,” Gachagua claimed.
According to Gachagua, Mburu allegedly uses these business ties to assert influence over government functions in Nakuru and to intimidate any officers or public servants who do not comply with his instructions.
“He told the police that anyone who disobeys him will be transferred. He says he financed the President’s campaign, so he has the power to command even the police,” Gachagua stated.
The former Deputy President also revealed that his convoy was teargassed by police while en route to Subukia for a meeting, a move he says was politically motivated and coordinated by local officials acting under Mburu’s orders.
“The police later admitted they were following illegal instructions. Some even told our team they would just throw tear gas in the air to pretend they were dispersing us,” Gachagua added.
Gachagua has now urged residents of Nakuru not to re-elect Governor Susan Kihika in the 2027 General Election, accusing her and her husband of misusing state power for personal gain.
State House and Governor Kihika have yet to respond publicly to the allegations.
