ODM national chairperson Gladys Wanga has called on residents across Nyanza to come out in large numbers and welcome President William Ruto as he begins a four-day tour of the region.

Ruto is expected to tour all four counties in Nyanza from Sunday to Thursday, with his visit expected to combine the launch and inspection of government development projects with public engagements.

Wanga urged residents to set aside political and avoid chaos that could disrupt the events.

She said the visit should provide an opportunity for the region to embrace development projects and engage with the government on issues affecting local communities.

She added that residents should avoid turning the President's visit into a political confrontation, insisting that the region was ready to receive him.

According to Wanga, Nyanza had been mobilised for a long time and should now focus on development while giving Ruto a warm reception.

“Come out in large numbers and welcome President William Ruto,” she urged residents.

Her remarks come as security preparations have been intensified ahead of the President's arrival.

Regional Commissioner Onesmus Kyatha said security agencies had increased their preparations to ensure the four-day tour proceeds peacefully.

He urged political leaders and those working with young people to encourage them to maintain peace during the President's engagements.

Kyatha said Ruto's visit would mainly focus on government projects, including roads, affordable housing and markets.

In Kisumu, the President is expected to launch the Katito-Awasi road and attend a church service at Voice of Salvation and Healing, among other engagements.

The visit therefore comes at a politically significant time, with Nyanza remaining an important region ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Wanga's mobilisation call could result in large crowds at Ruto's rallies and development functions, giving the President an opportunity to directly interact with residents while also showcasing projects being implemented by his administration.

For residents, however, the key question will be whether the projects launched during the tour will translate into better roads, business opportunities, jobs and improved public services.

Ruto's reception across the four counties will consequently attract attention, particularly given Nyanza's political history and the region's evolving relationship with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
