Jubilee Party leader Fred Matiang’i has admitted that it will be difficult for opposition leaders to agree on one presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Matiang’i acknowledged that the leaders seeking to challenge President William Ruto may have to make sacrifices and compromise on their individual ambitions for the opposition to unite behind one candidate.
He also noted that the government stands to benefit politically if opposition leaders remain divided as they prepare for the next election.
“It will not be easy for the opposition to agree on a single flag bearer, but we all understand the sacrifices that may be necessary.
What matters is recognizing that unity requires compromise and that the government benefits politically when the opposition remains divided. I have no reason to believe that any of the principals will let us down,” Matiang’i said.
Matiang’i is among the opposition leaders who are positioning themselves to contest the presidency in the 2027 General Election.
His remarks come as several opposition figures continue to express interest in the top seat, raising the possibility of a competitive process to determine who will carry the opposition's flag.
The former Interior Cabinet Secretary resigned from his job at the World Bank to focus on his presidential bid. He has since taken a more active role in Kenyan politics as he seeks to build support for his presidential ambitions.
Matiang’i is currently the leader of the Jubilee Party after former President Uhuru Kenyatta stepped down from the position. He is using the party as his political vehicle as he seeks to succeed Ruto as president.
