Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has attracted attention among Kenyans following reports that he made a surprise stop in the Mt Kenya region to purchase roasted maize, popularly known as mahindi choma.
The reported encounter generated excitement among some supporters, with several expressing their enthusiasm through the slogan “Hapa ni Wantam!” The reaction comes as Sifuna continues to attract public attention amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The roadside stop has added to discussions surrounding the senator’s political ambitions and his efforts to connect with people beyond areas traditionally associated with his political support.
Sifuna has been linked to the Linda Mwananchi movement, which is working to establish its political identity and mobilise support ahead of the forthcoming elections.
His engagements in the Mt Kenya region have also drawn attention to the importance of the region in determining the outcome of the next presidential contest. The area is considered politically significant because of its influence on national electoral calculations.
On October 3, the Nairobi senator attended the burial of Jackson Karua, father of People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, in Kirinyaga County. During the gathering, he challenged residents to reflect on who should represent the opposition in the presidential race scheduled for 2027.
His comments came amid ongoing discussions among opposition leaders about selecting a candidate capable of mounting a strong challenge against President William Ruto.
The reported roasted-maize stop presents a different aspect of political engagement, allowing politicians to interact informally with members of the public rather than meeting them exclusively at organised political gatherings.
Nevertheless, the enthusiasm displayed by supporters during such encounters does not automatically guarantee electoral backing. Whether Sifuna can convert the attention into meaningful political support will depend on his continued engagement with voters and the broader opposition strategy.
As preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace, Sifuna and other political figures are expected to intensify their outreach efforts across different regions.
