Tension ran high in Kabuchai, Bungoma County, on Saturday after Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and his convoy were violently confronted by armed attackers while campaigning for a local MCA aspirant in Chwele Ward.

The governor, accompanied by several leaders, found himself caught in a dramatic and chaotic scene that left vehicles vandalized and sparked a fierce war of words with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.

According to witnesses and leaders present, a group of armed youths ambushed Natembeya’s team shortly after they arrived in the area to drum up support for MCA candidate Eric Wekesa.

The attackers also targeted the home of Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga, leaving extensive damage in the compound and causing fear among residents.

Images and video footage shared widely on social media showed shattered windscreens, damaged vehicles, and shaken supporters. Governor Natembeya alleged that live bullets were fired toward his vehicle, claiming that the intention was to take his life.

He said the attack was not a spontaneous confrontation but a coordinated attempt linked to his political rival, Speaker Wetang’ula.

Speaking at Kalasinga’s residence during an assessment of the destruction, Natembeya accused the Speaker of abusing state security organs to intimidate opponents. He criticised the attack as backward and dangerous, warning that such political actions risk destabilizing the region.

“This is not politics; this is primitive intimidation,” Natembeya said.

“Members of Parliament in Kenya should be worried, because the person who leads them is involved in this kind of behaviour. If government machinery can be used to attack the home of an elected MP simply because of differing political views, then no Kenyan is truly safe.”

The governor questioned how ordinary citizens could feel protected if leaders themselves were under siege.

He insisted that the attackers were emboldened by powerful forces, calling on the Speaker to face him openly rather than operating through proxies.

“Live ammunition was fired at us from the direction of the Speaker’s residence,” Natembeya alleged.

“If you want to prove your strength, face me man-to-man. Stop hiding behind rogue officers and hired goons to intimidate your own people.”

The Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), under which both Natembeya and Kalasinga are allied, strongly condemned the incident. In a statement shared online, the party accused groups linked to Speaker Wetang’ula of orchestrating the violence.

The party urged the National Police Service and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to step in and curb rising political tension in Kabuchai ahead of the coming polls.

DAP-K described the attack as unacceptable and warned that Kenya’s democratic space cannot withstand the return of politically motivated violence. The party called for immediate investigations and the arrest of those involved.

Meanwhile, residents of Kabuchai expressed concern over escalating tensions in the constituency, noting that political rivalries have intensified in recent weeks. Some locals said they fear further disruptions as campaigns gain momentum.
