Kenya Power Issues New Directives To All Kenyans

Kenyans are set to pay more for electricity in November following the latest tariff review by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

The regulator announced that electricity prices will rise by Ksh4.78 per kilowatt hour (kWh), citing increases in fuel costs, foreign exchange adjustments, and statutory levies.

According to a notice published in the November 14 edition of the Kenya Gazette, the rise stems from multiple statutory charges that are now applicable to all electricity consumers.

The largest component of the increase, 381 cents per kWh, is attributed to the rising fuel energy costs incurred in electricity generation.

EPRA explained that this adjustment is in accordance with Clause 1 of Part III of the Schedule of Tariffs 2023, which mandates that all prices for electrical energy include a fuel energy cost charge.

In addition, electricity users will incur a further 95.89 cents per unit due to foreign exchange fluctuation adjustments.

This charge is intended to cover losses or additional costs arising from currency changes that affect electricity importation and operational expenses.

EPRA cited Clause 2 of Part III of the 2023 tariff schedule as the basis for this adjustment, which applies to all meter readings taken in November 2025.

Another minor increase of 1.29 cents per kWh has been added to cover the Water Resource Management Authority (WRMA) levy.

This statutory charge contributes to the sustainable management of the country’s water resources, which are critical in hydroelectric power generation.

The combined effect of these adjustments means that the average electricity consumer will face higher monthly bills, prompting both households and businesses to plan for the additional cost.

The increase highlights the continuing impact of global fuel prices, currency fluctuations, and statutory levies on domestic electricity pricing, reinforcing the need for energy efficiency measures and careful consumption monitoring.
