Residents of Kisii County are mourning again after Fred Mokaya, the husband of the late Esther Ghati, succumbed to injuries he sustained in a fire that destroyed their home.

His death comes only days after his wife was laid to rest, leaving their family and community in deep sorrow.

The tragic incident happened in Daraja Mbili, where the couple was well-known for running successful boutiques that served both retail and wholesale customers.

A disturbing video had earlier circulated online showing Mokaya running from the burning house with severe burns on his upper body.

The images left many Kenyans shaken as he appeared weak, desperate, and in great pain.

At first, neighbors suspected that a gas cylinder had exploded inside the house, but later investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) ruled this out.

Detectives revealed that another source of fire had been discovered, and evidence was to be presented in court.

Esther, who died earlier, was found to have lost her life through smoke inhalation, according to a postmortem report.

This finding helped to put aside rumors that had spread on social media suggesting foul play.

Mokaya, however, remained in critical condition. His brother, Jeff Mongare, explained that several hospitals had initially refused to admit him because his burns were too severe—estimated at 60%.

Eventually, he was taken to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where doctors fought to save him.

“We were told the chances of survival were slim. He could not talk or even open his eyes,” Jeff said.

Despite the family’s tireless efforts to protect and care for him, Mokaya’s condition worsened until he finally passed away.

The double tragedy has left relatives and friends heartbroken.

Neighbors and Kenyans online have shared emotional tributes, with many praying for strength for the couple’s children and families.

Meanwhile, Esther’s relatives took her body from the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary to her hometown in Sirare for preservation and burial arrangements.
