The political slogan “WanTam,” short for “One Term And Move”, is now causing heated debate in Kenya’s political space.

The phrase, pushed by some allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has drawn criticism from both Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni and former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu.

During an interview on K24 TV, Kioni dismissed the slogan as poorly thought out and counterproductive.

He argued that it sends the wrong message to voters and could easily backfire on the leaders who are supporting it.

According to Kioni, politics is about vision and continuity, not messages that limit leadership.

Shortly after the interview, Wambugu took to his Facebook page to add his voice.

Using humor and sarcasm, he warned that the slogan was politically dangerous, especially for first-term leaders who plan to seek re-election in 2027.

“There’s no way anyone who wants a second term will go around using WanTam,” he wrote, stressing that those embracing it now may not fully understand the damage it could cause to their future campaigns.

Wambugu, once a close ally of Gachagua, explained that slogans play a powerful role in shaping public opinion.

In his view, WanTam does not just target President William Ruto by suggesting he should serve only one term—it also undermines leaders in their first term who want to extend their political journey.

He noted that such messaging risks dividing the ruling coalition and isolating those who believe in continuity beyond 2027.

The debate highlights how political slogans, while often catchy, can carry heavy consequences.

In a country where voter perception can swing quickly, even a simple phrase can determine whether leaders win or lose public trust.

Both Kioni and Wambugu believe that allies of Gachagua must rethink their approach if they want to remain relevant in the next election cycle.
