Speaking on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, December 19, 2025, Cherargei accused Sifuna of undermining the legacy of the ODM and creating disunity within the party.
“Omwami, I thought you had a Damascus moment about the successes of the broad-based government led by President Ruto & late Former Prime Minister Odinga, but it looks like it was a lucid moment for your misguided attacks against,” Cherargei wrote.
The senator issued a stern warning to Sifuna, saying he should either step down from his position as Secretary General or change his approach to avoid causing further harm within the party.
Cherargei argued that Sifuna’s actions could weaken the opposition’s unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“You cannot continue wrecking the ship from within you. Either resign or be removed as Secretary General of the ODM party, or shape up because you are now a threat to Baba Raila Odinga’s legacy. Go and join your partners in dis-united opposition,” Cherargei said.
The controversy began after Sifuna made remarks about leadership priorities in government development projects.

The controversy began after Sifuna made remarks about leadership priorities in government development projects.
He highlighted a tendency among some leaders to focus on personal or local interests rather than national development, suggesting that this approach could hinder progress.
“Exactly the mentality that will get us to Singapore. Ati, when you get power, you start with yourself. Do I want the road to my village tarmacked? Yes. Is it a national priority to be elevated over, say, Bomas-Kiserian? No. In 2027, get rid of these dealers who think starting with themselves is the measure of leadership,” Sifuna said.
Sifuna’s comments came amid President William Ruto’s criticism of former Vice President and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Sifuna’s comments came amid President William Ruto’s criticism of former Vice President and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Ruto had argued that some long-serving leaders, including Kalonzo, failed to improve basic infrastructure, such as roads, even in their own communities, while questioning the government’s ability to complete nationwide development projects.
President Ruto insisted that such criticism reflects poor planning and lack of leadership. He defended his administration’s road construction agenda, highlighting efforts to transform the country’s infrastructure.
By calling Sifuna’s remarks a form of internal sabotage, Senator Cherargei positioned himself as a defender of the coalition between Ruto and the late Odinga, which he described as a unifying force in Kenyan politics.

Cherargei warned that internal attacks like Sifuna’s could weaken the party’s standing and disrupt the alliance’s objectives.
