The family of former Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Jirongo, has confirmed that he died from severe injuries caused by blunt force trauma in a road accident.

The findings were revealed during a press briefing by family pathologist Joseph Ndung’u on Wednesday, December 17, 2025.

Ndung’u detailed the extensive injuries observed during the autopsy, explaining that Jirongo’s body had multiple fractures.

“The late Cyrus Jirongo had fractures on his right hand, both legs, and multiple ribs. There was also significant internal damage, including a perforated heart and ruptured major blood vessels,” the pathologist said.

He further described the severity of the trauma:

“There were crush injuries to the chest and abdomen, leading to bleeding in both cavities. Additionally, his spinal cord was severed at the thoracic level. Our conclusion is that he died from crush injuries to the chest, abdomen, and spine caused by blunt force trauma.”

Jirongo, aged 64, died early on Saturday, December 13, 2025, after a head-on collision between his Mercedes Benz and a Climax Company passenger bus along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway near Karai, Naivasha. Police reports indicate that the crash occurred around 3 a.m., and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

While authorities have classified the incident as a road accident, Jirongo’s family has raised questions about the circumstances leading to the crash.

George Khaniri, co-chairperson of the burial committee, asked how Jirongo ended up in Naivasha, driving back to Nairobi in the early hours.

“Several questions remain unanswered about his movements before the crash,” Khaniri said.

The family is calling for a detailed government investigation into Jirongo’s death. Former Westlands MP Fred Gumo, a member of the burial committee, urged authorities to trace Jirongo’s movements using available technology.

“With cameras along the highways, it should be possible to track the car’s route from Karen to Naivasha and back to Nairobi,” Gumo said.

Authorities have yet to release additional details on the investigation. Meanwhile, the family has formed a committee to oversee funeral arrangements.

Jirongo is expected to be laid to rest on December 30, 2025, at his home in Lumakanda, Kakamega County.

Jirongo’s death has shocked many, including political leaders and the public, who remember him as a prominent figure in Kenyan politics.

Tributes have poured in from colleagues, supporters, and well-wishers.

Some members of the public have expressed concern about road safety in Kenya, emphasizing the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and improved highway infrastructure.

The accident has reignited discussions about road safety measures, especially on busy highways where high-speed collisions are common.
