President Ruto Confers Senior Counsel Rank on 54 Kenyan Advocates

President William Ruto on Thursday, December 11, elevated 54 advocates of the High Court of Kenya to the distinguished rank of Senior Counsel during a ceremony held at State House, Nairobi.

In his statement after the investiture, the President said the honorees are expected to carry the title with integrity and uphold the highest standards of legal practice.

“I have conferred the rank of Senior Counsel on 54 advocates of the High Court of Kenya. May they carry this title with integrity, patriotism, professionalism, and humility,” he said.

Ruto emphasized that the new Senior Counsels have a crucial responsibility in strengthening the country’s governance systems, safeguarding democracy, and advancing reforms in the justice sector.

“May they continue to serve our nation, defend our democratic values, and support reforms that improve access to justice for all Kenyans,” he added.

Who Made the List

Among those conferred were National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director General Noordin Haji.

Other notable names include Dr. Hosea Kimutai Kili, Kennedy Ogeto, Dr. Praxedes Chepkoech Tororey, James Mburu Kamau, William Ikutha Maema, Patrick Lutta Odongo, Dr. Ruth Anyango Aura, and Dr. Mercy Mwarah Deche.

The list also features Hassan Nunow Lakicha, Koki Muli Grignon, James Aggrey Mwamu, Adil Arshed Khawaja, Ahmed Issack Hassan, Paul Lilan, Henry Ongicho Asugah, Joseph Kipchumba Kigen Katwa, Jedidah Wakonyo Waruhiu, Mohammed Salim Balala, Rose Waithera Njoroge-Mbanya, Nazima Malik, Michi Kanyiri Kirimi, Alexandra Kontos, and Nancy Wakarima Karigithu.

Also recognized were Moses Kiping’etich Kurgat, Rubeena Dar, Professor Kivutha Kibwana, Lumatete Walubengo Muchai, Njoroge Regeru, Professor Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba, Anastacia Kioko Mululu, James Ochieng’ Oduol, Jane Njeri Onyango, Christine Anyango Agimba, Hillary Chacha Odera, Njeri Caroline Ndegwa Kariuki, Mercy Wangari Buku, Isaac Edwin Nicholas Okero, and Professor Kariuki Muigua.

The list further includes Richard Harney, Ahmed Sheikh Adan, Nelson Andayi Havi, Eric Theuri Njeru, Elisha Zebedee Ongoya, Dr. Muthomi Thiankolu, and Immaculate Muringo Kassait.

The President noted that the conferment recognises the lawyers’ exemplary service and contributions to Kenya’s legal development.

“Let it be known that the mentioned advocates now hold all privileges of the rank and dignity of Senior Counsel. This Investiture Order is issued under my hand and the Public Seal of the Republic on this 10th day of December, 2025,” he stated.

The honour places the advocates among the country’s most respected legal minds, marking a major milestone in their careers.
