Oburu Oginga's takeover of the ODM party less than a day after the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, according to Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, had a hidden agenda.
Shortly after Raila, who had led the party since its founding, passed away in October 2025 while receiving treatment in India, Oburu was named the new ODM Party Leader.
According to the ODM statutes, a party leader is chosen by the National Delegates Conference rather than appointed, hence Amisi argues that the action was unlawful.
He now believes that Oburu was put there by those with ulterior motives, which is why he made the hasty decision to fill the position and assert that he shouldn't be regarded as the party leader.
ODM is organised. What was the hoover? Would someone show up and claim leadership of the party? No. Why? "Because we have Article 6-2-2," he stated on Saturday.
"That said, a special national delegate’s conference shall be called in the event of the death of the party leader to elect, not nominate, a new party leader," according to a report in the People Daily.
According to Amisi, there was no need to replace Raila quickly because the party's rules stated that one of the three Deputy Leaders would take over until a new party leader was chosen.
