Coast politics is entering a new phase as Mining and Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Ali Hassan Joho steps forward with his brother Abubakar Joho known as Abu.
The move signals a clear plan to shape the region’s political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election. Abu who kept a low profile for years is now visible in public forums and youth meetings.
Joho has long been a key force in Coast politics through ODM. He is now positioning himself to remain influential at the national level even as the party faces internal strain.
With changing alliances Joho is exploring several paths that could secure his role in future power talks.
These options include senior leadership in ODM forming a Coast based party or taking a top role within UDA.
Recent closed door meetings by Coast Parliamentary Group have added weight to these plans. Several of the meetings were attended by Joho and focused on development needs.
Political discussions around 2027 were also present despite official claims that the talks were non political. The meetings drew attention from journalists and political observers.
Lawmakers from the region say Joho has helped them access key national leaders. Kinango MP Gonzi Rai said Joho has made it easier for Coast MPs to meet cabinet secretaries and even the president.
He cited a recent private security meeting with Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen. Another meeting with Education CS Julius Ogamba is planned soon.
There is also an effort to include all major Coast leaders in future talks. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi and Sports CS Salim Mvurya are expected to join upcoming meetings.
Leaders say the goal is unity and shared development rather than exclusion. This approach is meant to calm rivalry that has weakened the region before.
Political analyst Maimuna Mwidau says Joho understands his value ahead of 2027. She notes that UDA performed poorly at the Coast and needs strong local figures.
While Kingi and Mvurya support the government Joho still commands deeper grassroots loyalty. His influence among MPs remains strong.
As Joho secures his national footing Abu is mobilizing the ground.
He is engaging young people on jobs and voter participation. Leaders like Kilifi Woman Rep Gertrude Mbeyu back Joho as the Coast kingpin.
Some warn that sidelining him could see many MPs leave ODM. Only Nyali MP Mohammed Ali has openly criticized the Joho brothers.
