Sunday worship in Othaya, Nyeri County, turned into a scene of fear and confusion after chaos erupted moments after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua arrived for a church service.
Eyewitnesses say the calm atmosphere changed abruptly when a group of unidentified individuals began causing disturbances outside the church compound.
The commotion quickly drew the attention of Gachagua’s supporters, setting off heated confrontations that spilled toward nearby roads.
As tension escalated, police officers moved in to restore order. Tear gas canisters were fired around the church grounds and surrounding streets, forcing worshippers to flee in panic.
Some congregants, including women, children, and elderly church members, were reportedly trapped inside the sanctuary as tear gas fumes spread through the area.
The situation worsened when tear gas was lobbed toward Gachagua’s motorcade, further intensifying the confusion.
Videos circulating online showed frantic scenes of worshippers running for cover, others coughing and shielding their faces as clouds of gas filled the air.
The church service was brought to a sudden halt, with fear replacing prayer as Othaya town remained tense for hours.
In a strongly worded statement shared afterward, Gachagua claimed the disruption was not accidental but a coordinated attack.
He alleged that armed individuals, working alongside police officers, targeted him and his supporters.
“We are trapped in church and being attacked with tear gas and live bullets. Some of our vehicles have been set on fire. We ask Kenyans to pray for us to leave this place alive,” Gachagua said.
The DCP leader accused state agencies of intimidation, insisting that he had attended the service solely to worship peacefully.
He claimed excessive force was used and warned that violence was being deployed to silence dissenting voices.
By the time calm was restored, Othaya residents said the heavy police presence and running battles had left the town gripped by fear and uncertainty.
Police are yet to release a detailed statement clarifying the incident or responding to allegations of live bullets and torched vehicles.
As questions linger, the dramatic scenes have sparked national debate over security, political intolerance, and the safety of public worship spaces.
