Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has unveiled Nyali MP Mohamed Ali as the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) candidate for Mombasa Governor.

The announcement signals a major political shift at the Coast ahead of the next general election.

Gachagua, who now leads DCP after parting ways with the ruling alliance, is seeking to strengthen his party’s presence beyond the Mt Kenya region. Mombasa is seen as a strategic battleground.

Ali was elected Nyali MP in 2022 on a United Democratic Alliance ticket. His move to align with DCP marks a new chapter in his political journey.

During the unveiling, Gachagua positioned Ali as the right leader to steer Mombasa forward. He described the Coast region as key to national politics and economic growth.

By fronting a sitting MP with strong public visibility, DCP hopes to mount a serious challenge against established parties in the county.

Ali first gained national attention as an investigative journalist before joining politics. In Parliament, he has built his profile around oversight and public interest issues.

His entry into the Mombasa governor race is expected to energize local campaigns and trigger fresh political alignments.
