Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has launched a sharp political attack against President William Ruto following remarks about the future of the Azimio coalition.
The President had dismissed renewed efforts to revive Azimio, arguing that the coalition could not survive without the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
His comments were made during a public address in Nairobi over the weekend.
Gachagua, speaking later in Naivasha, strongly disagreed with that view. He claimed that ODM no longer holds the political influence it once enjoyed and insisted that the party has lost support in several regions that were previously considered its strongholds.
According to the former Deputy President, voting blocs in Western Kenya, Nyanza, Ukambani, and the Coast have moved away from ODM.
He argued that the party’s national appeal has significantly weakened and can no longer determine the direction of national politics.
Gachagua also turned his criticism toward President Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
He claimed that UDA has equally suffered major losses, particularly in the Mount Kenya region, which was central to its rise in the last general election.
He framed the current political moment as one where both major parties are struggling to maintain influence, suggesting that the country is headed toward a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general election.
President Ruto, however, has maintained that Azimio’s strength was largely dependent on ODM. He questioned the relevance of the coalition without the party, insisting that previous attempts to keep it alive had already failed.
