Wangui, a young saleswoman, was reportedly raped and murdered after leaving her sister’s house one evening in Nakuru. Her family says the last conversation she had with her father remains painfully fresh in their memories.
According to her father, Mr Maina, he spoke to Wangui only hours before she died. During the call, she told him she was preparing supper before going to sleep. She also asked him to pass greetings to her mother.
Before ending the call, Wangui mentioned that she and her sister planned to travel home the following day since it was a public holiday.
Sadly, that promise would never be fulfilled.
On the evening before the tragedy, Wangui had been staying at the home of her sister, Tracy Nyambura, in the Barnabas area of Nakuru.
Nyambura, who was pregnant at the time, recalled that the two had spent the evening together at home.
She explained that Wangui had been helping her with household chores and keeping her company during the pregnancy.
Later that night, Wangui reportedly received a phone call inviting her to attend a house party in Kiamunyi. Shortly after the call, someone sent her money for transport through her phone.
Nyambura said her sister informed her that she was going out for a short while but promised she would return later that night.
However, Wangui never came back.
The following day, the family received devastating news that the body of a young woman had been discovered near Ngata Bridge along the bypass connecting Nakuru and Eldoret.
Passers-by reportedly found the body stuffed inside a sack by the roadside. Authorities later confirmed that the victim was Wangui.
A post-mortem examination later revealed that the young woman had died from suffocation and had also been sexually assaulted.
Police investigations led to the arrest of a suspect believed to have invited her to the party that night. However, despite the arrest, the case has reportedly not resulted in any successful prosecution more than three years later.
The slow progress of the case has left the family frustrated and heartbroken.
Mr Maina recalled that when a local pastor first contacted him, he did not suspect anything unusual. He and his wife prepared to travel before the pastor later broke the devastating news that their daughter had died.
The family later went to Nakuru City Mortuary where they formally identified Wangui’s body.
For Wangui’s parents, the pain of losing their daughter under such brutal circumstances remains overwhelming.
They say their only wish now is to see justice served and those responsible for the young woman’s death held accountable.
