The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has apprehended a public officer serving in the Ministry of Lands after he was found in possession of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) badges, ammunition, and several government documents.

The arrest occurred today in Garissa County. According to a statement released by the DCI, the officer was intercepted along the Garissa-Lamu road while driving a black Toyota Prado with registration number KDQ 876Y.

The arrest followed a tip-off that prompted Garissa Sub-County detectives to monitor and subsequently apprehend the suspect.

During a thorough search of the vehicle, officers recovered a number of items including three rounds of 9mm Colt ammunition, six personal cheques each valued at Ksh 500,000, KDF badges indicating the rank of Captain, and four mobile phones of various brands.

The DCI team proceeded to the suspect’s residence in Madogo, where, with the assistance of the officer’s brother, a detailed search was conducted.

This search yielded more alarming items, including five live rounds of 7.62 x 51 ammunition, thirty blank title deeds, a lease certificate, and various other land-related documents.

Further investigations led to searches at two additional locations linked to the suspect, in Thika and Ruiru. At these premises, investigators found original land title deeds, applications for consent from the Lands Control Board in Kajiado, and assorted government documents relating to land ownership and transactions.

The DCI has confirmed that the arrested official is now in custody undergoing processing and is expected to appear in court soon.

The investigation aims to establish the extent of the suspect’s involvement with the illegal possession of military badges and ammunition as well as the misuse of government land documents.

This incident raises serious concerns about the infiltration of government officials into unauthorized activities involving state security items and sensitive public land records.

Authorities are continuing with the probe to uncover whether there is a wider network involved in the misuse of government property.

The public officer’s arrest is part of ongoing efforts by the DCI to crack down on corruption and unlawful possession of government assets within public service institutions.
