Authorities say Mwale spent the evening in the company of friends before heading to the home of a woman identified as Anna, who is believed to have been his girlfriend.
The group reportedly shared a meal before purchasing several small bottles of a strong locally brewed alcoholic drink.
It has also emerged that Mwale had been given a separate traditional drink earlier in the evening, though its contents remain unknown.
As the night progressed, his friends eventually left, but Mwale chose to remain behind. He reportedly told them he would spend the night at Anna’s home to help guard her harvested maize, a common practice in rural areas where theft is a concern.
Hours later, at around 2 a.m., the woman told police she was awakened by unusually loud snoring from Mwale. When she attempted to wake him up, he did not respond.
Alarmed, she quickly alerted the village headman, who then contacted Mwale’s relatives and the police.
