The officer, identified as Ronald Benard Ochieng, was attached to Homa Bay GK Prison and had served in the Kenya Prisons Service for nearly two decades.
According to reports, Ochieng was found dead in his house in the evening after colleagues became concerned when he failed to respond to phone calls. They later visited his residence, where they discovered his lifeless body.
Preliminary information indicates that the officer had received transfer orders on April 10 directing him to report to a new station in Siaya County.
It is alleged that he called his mother to share his concerns about the sudden posting before switching off his phone.
Authorities have not yet established the exact cause of death, and a post-mortem examination is expected to provide more clarity.
It has also emerged that before receiving the transfer, Ochieng had been undergoing treatment for severe pneumonia at Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital, raising further questions about the timing of the redeployment.
His body has since been moved to the Homa Bay Hospital Mortuary, where it awaits an autopsy as detectives continue their investigations.
The incident has sparked reactions among Kenyans, with many questioning the process and criteria used in transferring officers within the disciplined forces. Others raised concerns about mental health and the pressure faced by security personnel.
Some members of the public have called on authorities to ensure that officers are given adequate time and support when being transferred, especially those undergoing medical treatment.
Police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.
