Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has poured cold water on the “Wantam” slogan, claiming it was not well thought out and has only made the government more comfortable.
Speaking during a radio interview on Wednesday, Kioni said the slogan, popularized by the united opposition, was meant to be a strong rallying call against President William Ruto’s administration. However, he argued that it has failed to serve its purpose.
According to Kioni, the Constitution already provides that an elected leader serves a five-year term and must vacate office once the term ends. For that reason, he believes repeating “Wantam” adds no real pressure on the government.
“If you tell me that at the end of my contract I must go, I will ask you, ‘What am I supposed to do since it’s obvious?’” he remarked.
Kioni went on to say the phrase has turned into an advantage for the government. He noted that instead of feeling threatened, State House has become more open and confident.
“Before the slogan, the government was uneasy because of Gen Z protests that even threatened to occupy State House. But once ‘Wantam’ came, the gates were opened wide, and they now welcome delegations freely. The regime feels stronger, not weaker,” he explained.
The Jubilee leader contrasted the impact of “Wantam” with the energy of Gen Z protests, saying young people had delivered messages that left the government without comebacks.
In his view, the opposition’s slogan was easily countered when the government responded with its own phrase, “Tutam.”
“You see, the Gen Zs had a way of hitting, and there was no comeback. But with ‘Wantam,’ the reply is already there — ‘Tutam,’” he said.
Kioni, who has aligned himself with the united opposition, advised that future strategies need deeper thought.
He acknowledged that while the slogan has gained popularity among Kenyans, it lacks the political weight needed to shake the ruling regime.
