A fresh political confrontation is brewing after Alice Wahome issued a stern warning to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over his continued criticism of President William Ruto.
Wahome cautioned that Gachagua’s escalating attacks on the President could ultimately backfire and damage his own political future, describing his current trajectory as self-destructive.
Her remarks followed comments allegedly made by Gachagua after the Africa Forward Summit, a high-profile diplomatic event where President Ruto hosted more than 30 heads of state and government, boosting Kenya’s international visibility.
According to Wahome, instead of acknowledging the diplomatic success, Gachagua chose to publicly criticise the government, a move she believes has exposed contradictions in his political messaging.
She accused him of undermining not only local leadership but also international figures, pointing out that he had reportedly criticized both United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and French President Emmanuel Macron in the same political statement.
Wahome questioned how a leader who takes on such global figures could convincingly present himself as a unifying national alternative, arguing that his approach raises doubts about his political judgment and strategy.
She further warned that Gachagua’s sustained criticism of the President is unlikely to succeed, insisting that efforts to weaken Ruto politically would ultimately fail and instead isolate those involved.
The remarks highlight growing tensions within Kenya’s political landscape, particularly within the broader Mt Kenya political bloc, where competing loyalties and shifting alliances continue to shape public debate.
Political analysts say the exchange reflects an increasingly personal and confrontational style of politics as leaders position themselves ahead of future electoral contests.
While Wahome’s comments reinforce loyalty within the ruling camp, they also underline the widening rift between allies of President Ruto and Gachagua, who has remained vocal in his criticism of the current administration.
As political temperatures rise, observers expect more exchanges between the two camps, with both sides seeking to solidify support bases ahead of the next election cycle.
