A traffic police officer has died from injuries sustained after she was allegedly knocked down by a lorry that fled the scene in Makadara, Nairobi.

Corporal Joyce Muthoni Mwicigi, who was attached to traffic duties and held Service Number 69164, died at Nairobi West Hospital on August 22, 2026, approximately a day after the crash.

Police reports indicate that the incident happened on Friday, August 21, at about 12:30pm. Mwicigi was controlling vehicles at the junction of Lungalunga Road and Mogadishu Road when the lorry approached the intersection.

The Isuzu lorry, registration KZQ 282, was reportedly headed towards Donholm from the direction of House of Manji. The officer instructed its driver to stop to give other motorists an opportunity to enter Mogadishu Road.

Instead of complying, the driver allegedly continued driving and struck the officer, sending her to the ground. The motorist then reportedly accelerated away without stopping to assist her.

Mwicigi suffered multiple serious injuries, including a fractured pelvis, facial cuts and extensive bruising. In the course of fleeing, the lorry also collided with three other vehicles.

The injured officer was taken to Nairobi West Hospital, where medical staff attended to her for roughly 26 hours. She was later pronounced dead at around 2:10pm on Saturday.

Following the crash, senior police officers visited the location as investigators began documenting the circumstances surrounding the incident. The three vehicles damaged by the lorry were subsequently towed to a police yard for examination.

Officers based at Makongeni Police Station have opened investigations into the fatal crash and launched a search for the driver of the lorry.

The suspect had not been arrested by the time of the latest police report, while detectives continue efforts to establish his whereabouts and determine the circumstances that led to the officer's death.
