For Meshack Lutta, what began as a simple act of care for his ailing father has grown into an unexpected entrepreneurial journey, showing how challenging circumstances can sometimes create opportunities for new ventures.
Lutta, a graduate of Kabarak University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Information Technology, had built a career in Nairobi, where he worked in social media marketing. His professional journey, however, was interrupted when his father fell ill and required care.
Faced with the responsibility of looking after his father, Lutta made the difficult decision to leave his job and return to his family home in Kakamega.
While there, he began preparing fresh fruit juices for his father, hoping to provide him with a simple and nutritious drink.
At the time, Lutta had no plans to turn the activity into a business. With limited resources, he reportedly borrowed a blender and began experimenting with different fruits, spending about KSh100 on the ingredients.
The homemade juices soon attracted attention from people around him. Neighbours and other individuals who noticed the drinks began expressing interest in having fresh juice for themselves.
What had initially been a personal effort to care for his father gradually developed into a commercial opportunity.
Three years later, the initiative has reportedly grown into a developing juice business serving customers with different tastes and dietary preferences.
Lutta’s experience demonstrates how entrepreneurship can emerge from unexpected circumstances.
Despite holding a university degree and having professional experience in Nairobi, he adapted to a major change in his life and used his skills and business knowledge to build something new.
His journey also highlights the importance of starting small. From a borrowed blender and KSh100 worth of fruit, Lutta gradually developed an enterprise through consistency, experimentation and persistence.
His story shows that career setbacks do not necessarily mark the end of one's ambitions. In some cases, circumstances can open doors to opportunities that were never part of the original plan.
