Sifuna’s Party Vehicle Scramble as 2027 Presidential Options Multiply

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s ambition to contest the presidency in the 2027 General Election has triggered a growing scramble over the political vehicle that could carry his bid.

With the Linda Mwananchi movement facing disagreements over the party it should use, several political outfits have emerged as possible platforms for Sifuna, each backed by different political actors.

One of the options being floated is the Kenya Moja party, with Bishop Margaret Wanjiru reportedly calling on Sifuna to consider the outfit as he prepares for the presidential contest.

Another option is the People’s Renaissance Movement (PM), led by Saboti MP Caleb Amisi. The party has already publicly opened its doors to Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi movement.

In August, PM officials said the party was prepared to accommodate Linda Mwananchi candidates at various levels, including the presidency, Parliament and county assemblies.

Amisi has also repeatedly expressed support for Sifuna’s presidential ambitions. In August, he said Sifuna had been invited to participate in the PM party’s presidential vetting process, while maintaining that the party would have its own presidential candidate if Sifuna chose another vehicle.

PM was formally launched by Amisi in August and has since embarked on grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections. The party says it is built around economic liberation, justice and accountable governance.

Meanwhile, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has been pushing the Ukombozi People’s Party as another possible vehicle for Sifuna.

Recent disagreements within Linda Mwananchi have centred heavily on this question. Reports indicate that Sifuna has been associated with Ukombozi, while other leaders have proposed alternative parties.

The party debate has now become a major organisational question for the movement. While the various camps have continued to publicly support Sifuna’s presidential ambitions, they differ on how his candidacy should be structured and which party should provide the ballot-paper identity.

For Sifuna, the expanding list of options provides several possible routes into the 2027 presidential race.

However, the competing proposals also highlight the wider challenge facing Linda Mwananchi as its leaders attempt to transform a political movement into an electoral organisation ahead of the polls.
