Outspoken lawyer and politician Ndegwa Njiru has linked the upcoming Mbeere North by-election to the much bigger political battle expected in 2027.

Speaking on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, Njiru said that the way the opposition is uniting behind one candidate in Mbeere North could be the same way they unite behind a single presidential candidate to face President William Ruto in the next general election.

According to him, the decision to rally behind one candidate at the constituency level is not just about winning that seat.

Instead, it shows the opposition is capable of discipline, compromise, and focus—qualities that will be needed if they are to challenge Ruto’s grip on power in 2027.

“If the United Opposition has agreed on a single candidate for Mbeere North, we shall equally agree on a single presidential candidate to face Kasongo,” Njiru remarked.

He warned that disunity and endless fights within the opposition would only give Ruto an easy path to victory.

Njiru said the cost of gambling with internal divisions is too high and that opposition leaders must learn from past mistakes where rivalries weakened their campaigns.

“The risk of losing the mission for Kasongo is too high to gamble,” he stressed, reminding leaders that every by-election should be treated as a rehearsal for the general election.
Njiru’s message echoes concerns from many opposition supporters who feel that failure to unite has repeatedly given ruling coalitions the upper hand.

By pointing at Mbeere North, Njiru is sending a signal that grassroots unity is just as important as high-level negotiations among top leaders.

The by-election, though local, is now seen as a symbolic test of whether the opposition can prove it has learned from the past.

If the single-candidate strategy works, Njiru believes the same plan can be rolled out nationwide to deliver a strong challenge to Ruto in 2027.

His comments come at a time when the opposition is holding intense talks over leadership, party alignments, and a common political identity.

To Njiru, the message is clear: small wins today can prepare the ground for bigger victories tomorrow.
