Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has come under renewed pressure following claims that a recent late-night break-in at his office may have been an inside job, raising fresh concerns over the state of security within the government.
Jubilee Party presidential aspirant Dr Fred Matiang’i has dismissed official explanations surrounding the incident, in which an intruder reportedly accessed Murkomen’s high-security office at Nyayo House at around 10:45 pm and remained inside for nearly five hours without detection.
According to inquiry records, the officers were instructed to coordinate with youths drawn from Nyeri County, while local police units were allegedly directed not to interfere.
The operation is reported to have targeted a church service at Witima ACK Church, where Mr Gachagua was expected to worship on Sunday.
The disturbance occurred shortly after his arrival when vehicles entered the compound under police escort.
Witness accounts recorded by investigators indicate that armed men stormed the church compound, fired shots and released tear gas, causing panic among worshippers, including children.
The incident lasted several minutes before calm was restored.
After the confrontation, several vehicles were damaged, and church property sustained visible destruction, while some congregants suffered minor injuries.
Security officials later secured the scene as part of the investigation.
Interior ministry officials condemned the violence and ordered immediate action to identify those involved regardless of rank or political affiliation.
The National Police Service confirmed that the Internal Affairs Unit and detectives in Nyeri had commenced parallel investigations to establish the chain of command and the source of instructions.
Mr Gachagua later described the incident as a targeted attack and announced the suspension of his public engagements in the region, citing security concerns.
Police stated that the inquiry remains active and urged restraint as evidence continues to be reviewed.
