A senior lawyer has strongly criticised President William Ruto following the attack on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during a church service in Othaya, Nyeri County, on Sunday.

The incident led to chaos, with several vehicles destroyed, raising fresh concerns over political intolerance in the country.

Harrison Kinyanjui, an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, said the events in Othaya show that President Ruto is afraid of Gachagua’s growing political strength.

According to Matiang’i, the circumstances surrounding the breach point to internal complicity rather than an external security lapse.

Speaking on Sunday, Matiang’i warned that the Kenya Kwanza administration’s handling of security matters risks pushing the country into chaos.

He cited a series of troubling incidents, including disruptions of church services attended by opposition leaders, confusion in the education sector, electoral-related violence, and the unexplained breach at the Interior Ministry.

“The idea that a stranger could freely access the Interior Cabinet Secretary’s office at night and stay there for hours is unbelievable.

This was not a random incident. It has all the signs of an inside job,” Matiang’i said.

He also condemned the violent disruption of a church service in Othaya, Nyeri County, attended by Democracy for the Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua.

Tear gas was reportedly lobbed into the church, forcing worshippers to flee for safety. Matiang’i described the incident as shameful and accused security agencies of deliberate inaction.

“There is nothing to investigate. The images of the perpetrators are everywhere. Why have they not been arrested?” he posed.

Matiang’i urged Deputy President Kithure Kindiki to intervene and rein in security agencies, warning that continued political interference in policing could open the door to anarchy.

He called for dialogue, insisting that violence and selective enforcement of the law would only deepen divisions and insecurity across the country.
