“ODM Must Fly Its Own Flag” Orengo Draws Red Line on 2027 Presidential Race

Siaya Governor James Orengo has thrown down a political gauntlet that could redefine Kenya’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a church service on Sunday, January 25, 2026, Orengo declared that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) must field its own presidential candidate, warning that entering negotiations without a flagbearer would weaken the party’s influence and credibility.

Addressing congregants alongside ODM rebels led by Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, Orengo described ODM as the largest political party not just in Kenya, but across East and Central Africa.

According to him, it would be politically absurd for such a party to enter talks with rivals—especially President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA)—without its own presidential contender.

Orengo’s remarks come amid growing speculation that sections of ODM are warming up to a coalition with the ruling party.

He rejected that approach outright, arguing that UDA already has a presidential candidate and any negotiations under such circumstances would place ODM at a disadvantage from the outset.

Drawing inspiration from a sermon delivered at Kawangware PAG, Orengo rallied his faction to remain fearless and resilient.

He assured supporters that despite internal resistance, the Sifuna-led team would campaign nationwide and “withstand the storm” until victory is achieved.

Central to Orengo’s argument is the legacy of the late Raila Odinga.

He urged party members to revisit Raila’s speeches, writings, and recorded statements, insisting they offer clear guidance on ODM’s political path.

Orengo emphasized that Raila never authorized ODM to dissolve itself into a coalition before key demands—such as lowering the cost of living—were met.

As 2027 draws closer, Orengo’s declaration signals a hardening stance within ODM and sets the stage for an intense internal battle over the party’s identity and future.
