A tragic incident has rocked Mwariki in Nakuru County after a businessman allegedly poisoned his two young children, leaving one dead and the other in critical condition.
Police report that the man’s eight-year-old son died after consuming juice laced with what is suspected to be poison, while the younger child, aged two and a half years, was rushed to hospital in a serious condition on February 15, 2026.
According to authorities, the couple had left their children at home with a house help while they went to resolve marital issues at another residence.
The father returned at dawn on Sunday and went to the master bedroom where the children were sleeping.
He then went to the kitchen, poured juice into a glass that contained the suspected poison, and fed it to the children before leaving the house.
The house help later noticed the children vomiting and crying in pain and immediately rushed them to the hospital.
The boy was pronounced dead while receiving treatment, and the younger child remains admitted under intensive care.
Police visited the scene, collected the juice and other exhibits for laboratory analysis, and confirmed that they are investigating the case as a potential murder.
They are actively searching for the father to question him about the incident.
The deceased child’s body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
Investigators said the motive behind the poisoning is still unclear, and they are examining all angles to establish why the father allegedly carried out the act.
Authorities have urged parents to ensure children are never left in potentially unsafe situations and stressed that any signs of distress should be reported immediately.
The case has left the community in shock, raising urgent discussions about child safety and family disputes.
Gracefully, the DCI confirmed that forensic tests will provide more details on the poison used and could shed light on the events that led to the tragic deaths.
