Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja had a tough time on Thursday, 26, when he appeared before a Senate committee that had summoned him.

Governor Sakaja faced sharp criticism from Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who accused him of being disrespectful to Nairobi residents by cooperating with President William Ruto.

In a dramatic turn of events, Senator Sifuna stormed out of the chamber after nominated Senator Hezena Lemaletian showered Governor Sakaja with praise.

While responding to concerns raised by senators, Governor Sakaja defended the cooperation agreement, saying it is grounded in the Constitution. Lawmakers had questioned its intent, legality, and financial oversight.

The Governor told the committee that the Constitution must be read “holistically and conjunctively,” citing Article 118 on public participation and Article 6(2), which requires the two levels of government to conduct their relations through consultation and cooperation.

He maintained that the framework under which President William Ruto and Nairobi City County agreed is constitutionally anchored and aimed at enhancing cooperation and service delivery in the county.
