The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya has condemned the secret recording of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at a local pharmacy.

The society said the incident raises serious concerns about privacy and respect for patients. It noted that pharmacies are healthcare spaces where people seek treatment and advice in confidence.

According to the society, recording a patient without consent goes against professional ethics. It warned that such actions can damage public trust in healthcare providers.

The body stressed that all patients deserve privacy, regardless of their status in society. It said leaders, public figures, and ordinary citizens must receive equal protection when seeking medical services.

The society also reminded pharmacy owners and staff of their duty to protect patient information. Confidentiality, it said, is a core principle in healthcare practice. Any breach can have legal and professional consequences.

Pharmacists are trained to handle sensitive health matters with care. Patients often share personal details about their conditions, medications, and medical history. These conversations are meant to remain private.

The society urged pharmacy operators to strengthen internal controls. It encouraged them to ensure that surveillance systems, if any, are used strictly for security and not to invade patient privacy.
