The calm of Thursday’s by-elections in parts of the country was broken at Njarage Primary School polling station in Mbeere North, Embu County.

A Democratic Party supporter was injured after being attacked by a group described as goons.

The incident was reported at Ishiara Police Station, where officers have launched an investigation.

By-elections are taking place today, Thursday 26th February 2026, in four areas across Kenya.

Voters in Isiolo South Constituency, West Kabras Ward in Kakamega, and Muminji and Evurore Wards in Embu are choosing new representatives after the seats fell vacant due to deaths or resignations.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission opened polling stations at 6:00 am and will close them at 5:00 pm.

Officials urged orderly conduct at all stations.

Security has been strengthened with uniformed police officers stationed at every polling centre to prevent violence and intimidation.

Across the country, voting has been mostly peaceful, though turnout in some areas is lower than expected.

Authorities have assured that voters in queues when polls close will still be allowed to cast their ballots.

The attack in Embu has raised concerns about safety at polling stations.

Detectives say they are investigating the incident and are determined to bring those responsible to justice.
