Meru on the Brink: Governor Mutuma Trapped Between Stalled Projects and Sh100M Legal Wars

Political pressure is mounting on Mutuma M’Ethingia as critics intensify attacks on his administration over stalled development projects, rising political divisions, and growing legal disputes that are reshaping the political landscape in Meru County.

At the center of the criticism are several major county projects that residents say have failed to meet expectations despite heavy public investment.

Among the most cited are the Kanyakine Level 4 Hospital and the Sh350 million Maua Market project, both of which have become symbols of frustration among sections of local leaders and residents.

Opponents accuse the governor of lacking a clear development strategy and failing to sustain momentum on projects launched to improve healthcare and trade within the county.

The political environment has become even more complicated as some leaders claim Meru’s political direction is gradually shifting toward opposition-aligned forces associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Former Meru Governor Peter Munya has emerged as one of the strongest critics of the current administration. Munya questioned the county leadership style, arguing that public service should focus on delivery rather than political theatrics.

“Leadership is not about fanfare and showbiz. It’s about serving the people,” Munya said while criticizing the county’s development record.

Political tensions are also rising ahead of the planned “Linda Mwananchi” movement rally expected to be held in Meru. James Orengo confirmed preparations for the political mobilization, signaling what observers see as a broader attempt by opposition leaders to strengthen influence in the Mt Kenya region.

Meanwhile, legal disputes continue to pile pressure on Governor Mutuma’s administration. Former Governor Kawira Mwangaza has threatened to pursue a Sh100 million compensation and defamation claim, adding another layer of political uncertainty in the county.

Former Senator Mithika Linturi has also intensified criticism of the county leadership while positioning himself politically ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Despite the mounting criticism, Governor Mutuma has defended his administration, blaming delays on challenges in the release of county funds from the national government. He also dismissed claims that his political support is weakening.

The governor reaffirmed his loyalty to William Ruto, insisting he will continue supporting the President through the 2027 elections.

Even amid the criticism, the governor continues to receive backing from allies including Kathuri Murungi, who argue that the attacks against him are politically motivated rather than development-driven.
