Allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have intensified attacks against President William Ruto and his administration, accusing them of orchestrating a political scheme aimed at weakening Gachagua’s influence in the Mt Kenya region.
The latest accusations emerged after reports that the budget allocation for the Office of the Former Deputy President could be reduced by 25 percent, a move Gachagua’s supporters claim is politically motivated.
According to his allies, the proposed reduction is intended to limit Gachagua’s ability to travel, mobilize supporters, and sustain political activities across the country ahead of future political contests.
Members of his camp warned that the issue could mark a major turning point in their relationship with the current administration, while also putting the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee under pressure.
The allies further accused Ndindi Nyoro, the former chairperson of the committee, of allegedly using his influence to frustrate Gachagua politically through budgetary decisions.
Speaking to the media, Kamau Murango claimed there was evidence of a coordinated plan to redirect development funds away from critical agricultural programmes associated with the Mt Kenya region.
Murango argued that the alleged cuts were designed to weaken Gachagua politically by making it appear as though he had failed to defend the interests of farmers and residents from the region.
Among the concerns raised was the reported reduction of Sh70 million allocated for controlling snail infestations within the Mwea irrigation scheme, a project considered important to rice farmers in Central Kenya.
The allies also questioned the absence of coffee sector revival programmes in the revised 2025–2026 budget estimates, noting that Gachagua has consistently positioned himself as a strong advocate for coffee reforms and farmer empowerment.
According to Murango, excluding such programmes could negatively affect farmers while simultaneously damaging Gachagua’s political standing among agricultural communities.
The accusations reflect deepening political tensions between factions aligned to Gachagua and the Kenya Kwanza administration, particularly within the influential Mt Kenya voting bloc.
Political analysts say the dispute signals an increasingly aggressive battle for regional influence as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Despite the claims, government officials have not publicly responded to the accusations regarding the alleged budget-related political targeting.
